The Illawarra Regional Alliance Aboriginal Corporation, acknowledges and pay respects to all Elder’s, both past and present, to whom reside within the lands of the Illawarra Wingecarribee; we extend this respect onto our current and future, aspiring leaders of tomorrow.
IRAAC envisions a future where Aboriginal communities in the Illawarra and Wingecarribee regions are empowered, self-sufficient, and have regained control over their cultural and social well-being. The organisation aspires to see our community actively participating in all aspects of regional life, with increased opportunities for cultural preservation and economic development. By working with the NSW Government, IRAAC seeks to establish a governance structure that allows for the representation and active participation of Aboriginal communities in decision-making processes. Through this collaboration, IRAAC envisions a region where Aboriginal culture is respected, where leadership is passed on through generations, and where community-driven solutions are supported for long-term growth and healing.
IRAAC aims to improve the lives of Aboriginal communities in the Illawarra and Wingecarribee regions by advocating for better service delivery, supporting the development of leadership, and promoting intergenerational skills transfer, particularly with youth. We seek to act as a representative body for Aboriginal communities, engaging with the NSW Government to ensure that the services and policies reflect the unique priorities and needs of these communities. Additionally, IRAAC works to facilitate and support initiatives that strengthen Aboriginal identity and culture, improve education and employment prospects, and improve living conditions for Aboriginal people. One of the primary aims is to advance the cultural, social, political, economic, and legal interests of its members while promoting sustainability and self-sufficiency. Our aim is to be a more diverse organisation for our communities. IRAAC is an ORIC-registered Aboriginal corporation, and our membership is open to all incorporated Aboriginal organisations operating in the Kiama, Shellharbour and Wollongong local council areas.
IRAAC operates under key values of respect, integrity, and accountability, adhering to the cultural protocols of Aboriginal communities within the Illawarra and Wingecarribee regions. IRAAC respects the cultural authority and autonomy of Traditional Owner groups in the region, ensuring that decisions are made with sensitivity to cultural differences and the needs of each community. The organization is committed to supporting the cultural and spiritual connection of Aboriginal people to their land, and maintaining strong relationships with Aboriginal communities to promote healing and cultural preservation. Through its values, IRAAC aims to create an environment that fosters mutual respect and collaboration, ensuring that all actions undertaken reflect these core principles.
The Accord between the IRAAC and the State of NSW is a formal agreement aimed at fostering mutual respect and cooperation to address the unique needs and aspirations of Aboriginal communities in the Illawarra and Wingecarribee regions. It acknowledges the ongoing impact of historical dispossession and the need for healing, while recognising IRAAC as the legitimate regional Aboriginal governance body. The Accord ensures that government policies and service delivery are responsive to the priorities of Aboriginal communities, and it promotes open, respectful consultation and collaboration in decision-making. This agreement commits both IRAAC and the NSW Government to work together towards achieving greater self-sufficiency, cultural preservation, and improved outcomes for Aboriginal people in the region.
